Stern Show Censored In
New Orleans!
Here's A Brief Look Into A Day Of Censorship And Cover-Up
In New Orleans.
Dec 8, 1998:
6:00am - Listeners suddenly realize en mass that The End (106.7)
has been
censoring Stern bits for language (i.e., the N-word) and sexual
content
(i.e, butt-stuff). Although it's been going on for weeks, it was
never so
blatant as this morning. The faxes and calls start flooding into
The End.
6:15am - The End (504-260-1067) puts their phones on auto-hangup.
Any
incoming call is rudely picked up and then slammed down without
a word.
7:00am - End listeners begin calling and faxing Howard in
New York.
7:30am - Brent (the 'cool guy from Delaware', go figure) talks
with Howard
on the air and relays the censoring. Howard goes ballistic. ("This
really
burns my balls!")
7:40am - Domingo Ruiz of The End confronts Howard on-air.
Oddly, he allows
himself to be called a simple board-op when in fact, Ruiz has
been calling
himself the Stern Show producer in New Orleans since the show's
start.
(Oddly, or likely not, Ruiz later removes his answering machine
message that
states his producer position, following his conversation with
Stern.)
7:50am - During the conversation with Stern, Ruiz states (in
a fit of
stupidity), "I'm not butchering, I'm censoring."
8:00am - Howard vows to have the editing of his program looked
into by Agent
Don. "I'll just pull the show out of New Orleans!"
8:01am - The End is inundated with faxes and calls in support
of Stern.
This continues throughout the day.
Jump to Dec 9, 1998:
5:00am - Listeners wait to hear, or not to hear the Stern Show.
The End
continues to use Stern show clips (Howard's voice: "The day
we get the
likes of you off the air, will be the day America becomes a safe
place to
live again", without actually mentioning that the show is
going to air.
Now 6am - We wait and wait and wait... What will the future
be for Howard in
New Orleans? Only time will tell.
